On the Santa Ynez Chumash Reservation, 1990     Juanita Centeno and Sneezeweed
Juanita Centeno, who passed on in 1993, was a recognized elder and keeper of the Chumash and Yaqui cultures. I spent much of my free time, over numerous years visiting with her and her husband-companion Jose Castillo (a Huichol from Mexico). I used to travel with them over Central California, helping with their classes, presentations and teaching materials on Chumash material and natural culture (particularly musical instruments and medicinal plants).

Juanita honored me in a ceremony before she passed on, adopting me as her grandson.

UCLA Hunger Strike 1987 (we won!)

On November 11, 1987, I took part with UCLA Chicana/o undergraduate students to help organize a hunger strike, to challenge the disparate treatment experienced by undocumented students in the financial aid process. The 100 + protesters set forth several demands before the UCLA administration, including  the creation of a written policy providing undocumented students with equal access to university financial aid sources.
